Reflections on Wonderful Women

I have had the honor and fortune to learn from, pray and work with, as well as laugh and cry with the best women. My teachings began as a young girl, starting with the women in my family.

Most notable was my Auntie Veronica. She has been an inspiration since I was a little girl. She is the most beautiful woman I know and everyone who knows her would agree that her beauty shines from within her and radiates out all around her. She is strong, she is talented and I'm proud to call her my Auntie. As I am writing this, I can hear her laugh, strong and full of joy. In my life I have had great times and hard times. The women in my life have been there for me in both and are still with me today. Thank you Amanda, Lisa, Aunt Jessica, Andrea, Melanie, Leslie, Big Lisa, Claudine, and so many others. -- Michele Justice, May 2015

March Winner: Picturing Elders

Thank you to everyone who submitted a picture and a story about an elder for our March contest. Jynell Jones is the randomly-selected winner, honoring her uncle John Begay. She wrote, "My dear Uncle John was originally from Coyote Canyon, NM. He was actually my Grandfather yet Uncle John seem to fit better. He was a well educated man in the field of Education. He focused on teaching children around the Navajo Reservation and he is the reason I found myself turning to the Education field after being in the medical field for so long." What an inspiration!

Remembering Our Elders

When I think of my own Grandparents, my thoughts are filled with love, comfort, fond memories, and a bittersweet sadness that they are no longer with us in body. I know without a doubt that they are always with me in spirit and in my own mannerisms. I hear them in my voice. I see my grandma in my eyes every once in a while. Or a memory or teaching pops in my head at the right moment; just when I needed that guidance. Thank you, Grandma and Grandpa.

Reflections: Protecting Our Children

I always felt protected as a child. Because of this feeling I carried with me, I was surprised to learn as I grew older and became an adult that not every child grows up protected; that not every family knows how to protect their children; and not every person knows what to do when they find out a child is not being protected. I feel so strongly that our children must be protected, that I built my company with the mission of protecting our children in mind. Take the time to read how to recognize and report child abuse. Our children in each community deserve to be protected, loved, and cherished. They really are our future.
